General Band Questions

Does my student get a grade for band/color guard?
Yes! Per the fine arts grading policy, students are graded for both in class and after school rehearsals/performances. Students receive a rehearsal grade for daily performance in class. Brass and Woodwind students will receive a grade for Smart Music assignments. Color Guard students will have video assignments. Percussion students will have specific assignments and individual listening’s with Mr. Pitre. We want all students to be successful and progress through the program. If your child has a low grade, encourage them to come to class with all materials each day, attend all after-school rehearsals/performances, and submit all homework assignments on time.
Are uniforms provided?
Yes, each student will have the main parts of the uniforms provided for marching band and concert seasons. Shoes, socks, and tux shirts (boys' concert season) will need to be purchased separately.

Exceptions:
For the first three games of the football season, the band will wear their band t-shirt (provided to the student) and the student's own khaki shorts. The temperatures in Houston in late August and early September are too hot for full marching uniforms. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are encouraged in the heat.

For select concerts, students will not wear their provided concert uniforms but will be required to wear either a relaxed outfit with their band shirt or students will be asked to wear Sunday best (no jeans or tennis shoes).
What if a student needs to leave early from an event?
Please send a note or email to Mr. Wood prior to the event – kevin.wood@cfisd.net

Students will be permitted to leave during an event only with prior written notice or in case of an emergency. The student will need to check out with one of the chaperones or band directors prior to leaving.
Is there anything the band needs that I can donate?
Yes, we are always in need of pre-packaged snacks for the students after football games. We also are in need of chips, soda, and full-size candy bars for concession stands when we host events, such as middle school region band auditions, at Cy Creek High School.
Is there a payment plan option to pay band fees?
Yes, if you are not paying your band fees in full, your first payment of $200 will be due on fee day in August, followed by $100 installments each month from September to November.

*If you are unable to make the payments on the specified plan above, please email the treasurer at ccbbctreasurer@gmail.com. We are willing to find a plan that works best for your family.
Is there a clear bag policy at stadiums?
Yes, at CF-FCU and Pridgeon stadiums, clear backpacks, totes, and storage bags will be allowed with no size restrictions. Non-transparent purses and bags will be limited to 6” x 9” x 5”.

Please refer to individual stadium websites for information on out-of-district games.

Marching Band Questions

What do I need to know for Marching Band Camp?
During band camp, students will be outside in the mornings. As the day gets hotter, we will move indoors.

What to wear:
  • Comfortable, lightweight clothes:
    • Shorts and T-shirts with lightweight fabrics and light colors.
    • Please keep all attire appropriate according to CFISD policy.
  • Tennis shoes with socks for agile feet with no blisters.
    • No flip-flops or sandals.

What to bring:
  • Sunscreen!
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • A water jug filled with ice and water is extremely important. We want all students to stay hydrated during rehearsal.
    • The band will provide you with a blue gallon size water jug. Please bring this every rehearsal and game day with your name clearly written on it.
  • Your instrument
    •  Get your horn out and play a few notes during the summer. We will start learning music on day one!
  • Pencil
  • Bring your own lunch
    • Students are not permitted to leave campus for lunch.
    • Parents may drop off lunch on any day at 12:15 pm.

How to prepare:
  • Get out in the heat sometime this summer to begin acclimating if you have not already been doing so.
  • Start to hydrate the night before with water or a sports drink.
    • Warning - If you are at rehearsal and you are thirsty, you are already becoming dehydrated. Please keep hydrated during the entire day during the marching season.
  • Eat a sensible breakfast.
    • Be sure to avoid milk….trust us!
How long is marching practice after school?
UIL (University Interscholastic League) only allows up to 8 hours of scheduled marching rehearsal each week. Bands are also allowed an additional 1-hour rehearsal on any day there is a performance – football game and/or marching contest. The breakdown of what days and how long will be communicated at the beginning of the school year. Please remember to check the calendar regularly. Students with unexcused absences for marching band rehearsals will not be able to perform at halftime at the football game.

On every rehearsal day and football game day, students should bring his/her water jug (filled with water) and a change of clothes for marching rehearsal.
What happens if it rains during marching rehearsal?
If it looks like it will rain for most or all of rehearsal, we may move rehearsal inside (depending on inside rehearsal space availability) or cancel for that day. Students and parents will be notified via Remind as soon as the directors make that decision.

If it looks like it may only rain for part of the rehearsal, then we “wait it out” as best as we can. Occasionally, we do practice in a light rain. The color guard silks, percussion, and woodwind instruments will be put away, and we resume rehearsal as normal. If the rain increases in intensity, then all students go inside. A decision on how the rest of rehearsal will be conducted will be communicated through Reminds.
What happens if there is lightning during a marching rehearsal?
CFISD provides the band directors (and athletic coaches) with a weather app that detects lightning. Directors and coaches begin receiving alerts when lightning is within 20.0 miles. At 8.0 miles or closer, all outside rehearsals immediately stop, and all students are moved inside. Students and directors do not go back outside until the director has receives clearance. Remember, the directors are typically standing on the tall metal tower for rehearsal — lightning is taken seriously.
What is UDBApp Pro?
In addition to using coordinate sheets to learn drill, all students will have access to the Ultimate Drill Book App (UDBApp Pro). The subscription fee is paid by the CFISD Fine Arts office for all high school band and color guard students. The app only requires internet or wi-fi one time to access and download the current drill file. Login instructions will be given to the students at the beginning of the marching season.

The Ultimate Drill Book app is a tool designed to enhance the rehearsals and performances of marching bands. The app enables users to view drill charts, which are diagrams depicting the positions and movements of performers on the field. Each downloaded show is tailored to individual students, displaying their specific coordinates for every count. This feature allows students to study their movements in detail and understand how their positions align with others, maximizing the overall effectiveness of the show.
What if a student needs to go to tutoring?
Students have at least one (sometimes two) day per week without after-school rehearsals. Please try to schedule tutorials, club meetings, and medical appointments on these days off or in the morning before school. Students with unexcused absences for marching band rehearsals will not be able to perform at halftime at the football game.
Can students visit the concession stands or friends during football games?
No, students need to stay in the band section unless they are using the restroom. Eating or drinking anything other than water can damage the instrument.
What if I need to leave early from a game?
Please send a note or email to Mr. Wood prior to the event – kevin.wood@cfisd.net

Your child should leave his/her marching uniform with one of the leadership students. Students will be permitted to leave during a game only with prior written notice or in case of an emergency. The student will need to check out with one of the chaperones or band directors prior to leaving.
